DJ Maphorisa, the man behind many of your favourite clubbangers, is no stranger to international acclaim and shows, having produced for American acts like Major Lazer, Jason Derulo, and Trey Songz; Nigeria’s Wizkid and Davido; South Africa’s Black Coffee, Oskido and Emtee, as well as countless others across Africa. The Soshanguve, Pretoria-born producer and performer’s career was catapulted by the release of 2013’s “Y-Tjukutja,” undoubtedly the biggest song in South Africa that year. In 2014 he produced and featured on Mafikizolo’s pan-African smash hit “Khona,” which won a 2014 MTV African Music Award . Most recently, DJ Maphorisa has produced the soon-to-be-anthem “Particula” with American supergroup Major Lazer, which also features Jidenna, Nasty C, Ice Prince and Patroranking. After enjoying great 2016 success with Kwesta’s major South African hit “Ngud” (also featuring Cassper Nyovest), Maphorisa had his own pan-African hit, “Soweto Baby,” featuring Wizkid and DJ Buckz, which took the 2016 award for Best Collaboration at the MTV MAMAs.

The award-winning duo, Black Motion, possesses an energetic dance-routine-filled stage act that makes use of decks and a set of African and Latin drums. Thabo Mabogwane (31) and Bongani Mohosana (30) have released four albums since 2009. 2014’s Fortune Teller reached gold status in just one month, and captured a 2015 South African Music Award (SAMA) for Best Dance album. Their 2016 album,Ya Badimo, was certified platinum and won Black Motion a pair of 2017 SAMAs, for Best Duo and Best Dance Album.
Acclaimed Jazz outfit Shabaka and The Ancestors is comprised of London saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings and South African musicians, Mthunzi Mvubu, Mandla Mlangeni, Ariel Zamonsky, Gontse Makhene, Tumi Mogorosi, Nduduzo Makhathini and The Brother Moves On vocalist Siyabonga Mthembu. Mthembu is excited to be on the lineup in Johannesburg and Brooklyn as he’s “Followed AFROPUNK for many years, I even used to email them to get The Brother Moves On on the lineup, so that we are playing the St Heron Stage as Shabaka And The Ancestors is beyond amazing! To be going to a festival that celebrates blackness and the transatlantic conversation with Shabaka And The Ancestors, a band that was created for such, is God. Look at God!”

After 14 years, AFROPUNK’s annual festivals take place in Paris, London and Atlanta, and the Brooklyn leg of AFROPUNK will give South Africans a taste of what is to come to Johannesburg for the first time in December. Hailed as a world renowned festival by the likes of The New York Times, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and others, it also features many aspects aside from the festival itself. The Spinthrift Market showcases and celebrates the best of the AFROPUNK maker community; The Hair Village, a celebration of the culture and history that hair represents through interactive activations; The Battle For The Streets skate contest and Bites&Beats an AFROPUNK curated food experience for everyone from vegans to paleo’s featuring tastes from around the world.

Each year AFROPUNK curates post-festival events that transform the neighborhoods adjacent to the park — Fort Greene, Bedford Stuyvesant and Williamsburg — into a captivating playground of music, art, comedy, film screenings and culture. This year’s AFROPUNK After Dark events include an annual Fancy Dress Ball, Afro Comedy, FAR OUT BLACK: An Evening of Afro-Futurist Short Films, The Rebel Soul Cypher and others.

AFROPUNK is a hotbed of creativity. This year the festival has raised the bar and will feature installations from photographer Hassan Hajjaj, No More Black Targets an art collective working towards increasing knowledge of Gun violence led by Cypha, a photo-based interactive installation from Oluseye, and three dimensional murals and sculptures from Dizmology in Art and Times exhibitions throughout the park. Additional exhibitions and installations will be featured on-site in partnership with The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
