SONY HELPS PHOTOGRAPHERS UNLEASH THEIR INNER CHAMPIONS AT 2025 WMA EVENT

In sports photography, milliseconds matter. Whether it is the final shot that wins the championship or the putt that secures the coveted green jacket, catching the perfect moment is everything. At this year’s World Media Agencies event, held from 15–17 August in the heart of Kruger National Park, Sony’s cutting-edge Alpha range proved why it is the best in the business when it comes getting the perfect shot

Over three days, professional sports photographers and photojournalists gathered for a hands-on masterclass in capturing the unpredictable.

“Our mission at Sony is always to empower storytellers to create magic. To do that, we create equipment that feels less like a device and more like an extension of themselves. The World Media Agencies event gave us the perfect opportunity to showcase how our Alpha range delivers precision, speed and clarity in every frame,” explains Jobin Joejoe, Managing Director, Sony Middle East and Africa.

From a range of different workshops, participants put three of Sony’s most advanced cameras through their paces:

  • Sony Alpha a1 II Mirrorless Digital Camera – The second generation of Sony’s flagship α1 combines enhanced AI-based subject recognition with the high resolution and speed of the original. Its Fast Hybrid AF system delivers superb tracking, precision, and capture success rates, making it ideal for action that unfolds in an instant.
  • Sony Alpha a7R V Mirrorless Digital Camera – Purpose-built for accuracy, even in challenging conditions, the α7R V features a dedicated AI processing unit for advanced subject recognition, high AF precision in low light and a unique 4-axis multi-angle monitor for versatile shooting. It also allows easy 4K streaming when connected to a PC or smartphone, making it perfect for hybrid content creators.
  • Sony Alpha a9 III Mirrorless Digital Camera – With the world’s first full-frame stacked 24.6 MP CMOS sensor and a global shutter system, the α9 III redefines speed. It offers 4K 120p recording without cropping and can perform full flash synchronisation up to an unprecedented 1/80000 second.

Award winning photographer, Nic Bothma attended the event saying, “This group of talented photojournalists and sports photographers often work under intense conditions. Whether they’re capturing test cricket matches or documenting major political milestones, they need equipment that matches their skill. This event offered a beautiful and relaxed setting to reconnect and learn from one another. It was a such a joy exploring technology, sharing ideas and engaging in lively discussions. The warm feeling of connection and valuable lessons reminded us why we love photography in the first place”.

The workshops challenged photographers to adapt between vastly different shooting environments and gave them a space to hone their skills with some of their colleagues and peers. Beyond the hands-on sessions, the event became a hub for exchanging ideas, techniques, and stories from the field. For many, it was an opportunity to test new gear in real-world conditions that demanded both speed and precision, the exact environments the Alpha range was built for.
