RISE AGAINST HUNGER X CLOVER PARTNER TO FEED 50 000 SOUTH AFRICANS

by

Clover Mama Afrika Trust and Rise Against Hunger (RAH) have partnered to see meals to the value of over R200 000 being donated to Clover Mama Afrika’s Mama Zakhe of Princess, Roodepoort, as part of a new pilot project partnership.

The news was announced following several collaborative meetings between the companies. “We are thrilled to announce this partnership, and we are especially grateful to Rise Against Hunger for their generosity. Mama Zakhe is a worthy recipient as she feeds over 800 people in her community,” explains Rika Haasbroek, Manager Corporate Social Investment for Clover SA.

Rise Against Hunger aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals which is growing a global movement to end hunger by empowering communities, nourishing lives and responding to emergencies.

Mama Zakhe Rammekwa left her job as Assistant Director of Johannesburg Child Welfare in 2006, to start her own charity centre. She did so after noting the need for a day-care facility that offers daily meals, health and hygiene monitoring, counselling, life skills support, and suitable education. She joined Clover Mama Afrika in 2010 and has since been taking valuable courses to further develop her skills and create further income opportunities for her centre.

Now, Mama Zakhe cares for 459 children daily and has a feeding scheme for more than 374 adults and seniors, which seems to increase daily. She is assisted by 23 full-time caregivers and tends to child-headed households in the nearby community.

The first delivery of 10 boxes aptly arrived at Mama Zakhe on World Food Day. This will be followed by additional deliveries in the coming weeks. The partnership will see a total of 54 000 meals being donated by Rise Against Hunger. Each packet provided contains six meals: enough to feed a family one meal per day. “Mama Zakhe will receive 9 000 packets (approximately 250 boxes) from our cause, to help her continue on her journey of feeding her community,” says Nadine Sandrock, the National Marketing & Fundraising Manager for Rise Against Hunger.

Recently Mama Zakhe’s food parcel support has become infrequent and inconsistent. Receiving only 150 from the Food Parcel system every four months and having only received a small portion of her allocation in 2025, Mama Zakhe was not able to cater to the demand from her hungry community members. As the local chairperson representing 10 ECD centres, Mama Zakhe will distribute the donations throughout the broader community, ensuring that both the centres and local residents benefit from this support. “This donation will bring much-needed relief to the community of Princess, as we have been struggling to keep up with the demand for nutritious food, I am so grateful for this blessing,” exclaimed Mama Zakhe. “In July this year, for our Nelson Mandela Day initiative, Clover SA staff participated in packing meals with Rise Against Hunger. Following this special day, Nadine and her team, generously agreed to donate a significant portion of these meals to Clover Mama Afrika. This is a wonderful development that stemmed from a meaningful corporate social responsibility activity,” says Haasbroek.

“While it’s a pilot for now, we’re hopeful that this initiative will pave the way for further partnerships in future. I extend my sincere thanks to the full RAH team! This makes a huge difference to Mama Zakhe and her community,” concludes Haasbroek.
