As the month of love draws near, Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema promotion continues into February with two love-themed classics for you and your loved one to enjoy, plus the final film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy – all at the classic price of just R50 per ticket.

“Bringing back popular movie titles from years gone by is proving to be a popular must-see-again option for our big screen fans and, with the discounted ticket price for these Throwback Cinema titles, what’s not to love in this month of love! Continuing this popular promotion, the February line-up includes two special Valentine-focused titles, either as repeat viewing or for a first-time big screen experience,” says Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer at Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

First up, releasing on 06 February, is the psychological thriller, Fifty Shades of Grey (PG16)Despite mixed reviews when the first film in the franchise released in 2015, the movie was a major commercial success, grossing over $569 million worldwide against a $40 million budget. The film, based on the best-seller book by E.L. James, and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, became a talking point on consent and the portrayal of kink in mainstream media.

When college senior Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) steps in for her sick roommate to interview prominent businessman Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) for their campus paper, little does she realise the path her life will take. Christian, as enigmatic as he is rich and powerful, finds himself strangely drawn to Ana, and she to him. Though sexually inexperienced, Ana pursues the relationship but soon learns that Christian’s sexual desires push the boundaries of pain and pleasure.

The second film for February, releasing just after just Valentine’s Day on 20 February, is the 1995 romantic comedy, Sense and Sensibility. The film is based on the timeless novel by Jane Austen, with the screenplay written by Emma Thompson, for which she won an Oscar. The Dashwood sisters, sensible Elinor and passionate Marianne, feel their chances at marriage seem doomed by their family’s sudden loss of fortune.

In Georgian era England, when their father Henry Dashwood dies unexpectedly, his estate must by law pass on to his son from his first marriage, John and his wife Fanny. But these circumstances leave Mr. Dashwood’s current wife and three daughters Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret, without a home and with barely enough money to live on. As Elinor and Marianne struggle to find romantic fulfilment in a society obsessed with financial and social status, they must learn to mix sense with sensibility in their dealings with both money and men. Directed by Ang Lee, the film stars Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, James Fleet, Tom Wilkinson, Gemma Jones, Harriet Walter, Alan Rickman and Hugh Laurie.

Continuing the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy as part of Throwback Cinema in February, the third film has its big screen release on 27 February. The journey reaches its emotional and cinematic climax with The Return of the King, which swept the 2004 Academy Awards with 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Peter Jackson, and Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay, a record-tying achievement that cemented the trilogy’s place in film history.
