MAFIKIZOLO JOINED ON STAGE BY TIWA SAVAGE, FLAVOUR AND DR SID AT “ROAD TO MAMA – NIGERIA” IN LAGOS ON FRIDAY 30 MAY

Lagos, Nigeria, 27 May 2014: With the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) just over a week away, the line-up for MTV Base’s Road to MAMA party just gets better and better as no less than 8 MAMA nominees take the stage together for Lagos’s off-the-chart pre-MAMA warm-up.

The MTV Africa Music Awards is brought to you by KwaZulu-Natal Province in association with Absolut and The City of Durban. South Africa Tourism is also a key partner to the MAMA.

Joining the glittering performer line-up for Road to MAMA – Nigeria at the Marquee, Federal Palace on 30 May are Flavour, (nominated for Best Live at MAMA 2014) Tiwa Savage (Best Female) and Dr Sid (Song of the Year).

Also booked to electrify fans at Road To MAMA Nigeria are be four-time MAMA 2014 nominee Davido (Best Male, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Collaboration) while South African Afro Pop sensations Mafikizolo (Best Group, Song of the Year, Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration) are flying in specially for the gig. Also representing for Nigeria are Best Female nominee Chidinma, Song of the Year nominee KCee and Best New Act nominee Burna Boy.

Making sure the party goes with a bang, and keeping Lagos party people on the dancefloor through to the small hours of the morning, will be star MTV Base “Mixology” DJs, DJ Humility and DJ Caise, and top turntablists DJ Spinall and DJ Obi.

Featuring contemporary artists and music that are making waves across the continent, Road To MAMA Nigeria is a pan-African club tour, that has been criss-crossing the continent in the build up to the MAMA awards.  Previous editions have visited Durban, South Africa and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Road to MAMA – Nigeria will take place at The Marquee, Federal Palace Hotel V.I., Lagos, on Friday 30 May.  Doors open at 9:00 pm.  Tickets are available on the door or at at www.afritickets.com, priced N5,000.

Road to MAMA – Nigeria provides an electrifying taster of the upcoming MTV Africa Music Awards, which are taking place in South Africa for the first time at the ICC, Durban on 7 June 2014.  Nominees are competing in 18 different categories including Best Male, Best Female, Song of the Year, Artist of the Year and Best Video.  Tied for first place in the nominations for the 2014 MAMA are Davido and South African artists Mafikizolo and Uhuru, who each scored 4 nominations while going directly head-to-head for Song of the Year, Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration.  Following closely behind with 3 nominations each areP Square (Best Group, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year), South Africa’s Mi Casa (Best Group, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year), and Angolan artist Yuri Da Cunha (Song of the Year, Best Lusophone and Best Collaboration).

Nigerian musicians, personalities and  achievers are recognised the length and breadth of this year’s MAMA.  Video director Clarence Peters is nominated three times – for Transform Today by Absolut and twice for Best Video.  Writer Chimamanda Adichie and actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde are both nominated in Personality of the Year, while Nigerian social entrepreneur Toyosi Akerele is nominated for the inaugural MTV Base Leadership Award.

Broadening the scope of the MAMA awards in 2014, achievement in non-music fields is recognised in three “lifestyle” categories including “Personality of the Year”, “Transform Today by Absolut”, and the “MTV Base Leadership Award”.  The “MTV Base Leadership Award” is awarded to a young African man or woman under the age of 35 who is inspiring young Africans by their leadership and extraordinary achievement in a prominent field (including but not limited to: the arts, business, politics, science, entrepreneurship and charitable work).  “Personality of the Year” recognises personalities and achievers active outside of the music space who are excelling in their chosen field and who are representing Africa in a positive light, both at home and abroad, in disciplines such as comedy, fashion literature and sport.”Transform Today by Absolut“, which forms part of ABSOLUT‘s “Transform Today campaign, is aimed at celebrating the power of young individuals who transform the image of Africa through their creativity and vision.

The MTV Africa Music Awards will premiere live across Africa on 7 June at 21:00 CAT on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) and MTV (DStv Channel 130), and subsequently broadcast around the world to half a billion music fans worldwide on MTV and affiliate channels.  Celebrating musicians and achievers who have made the most impact on African youth culture throughout the year, MAMA 2014 will feature dazzling performances from African and international artists, including the awards’ signature collaborations between artists of different genres and cultures – a high point of every show.

Voting for the MTV Africa Music Awards is open at www.mtvbase.com from up until midnight on 4 June 2014. Voting for Song of the Year continues up until the live show on 7 June.
