The seven seas, the seven dwarfs, the seven… the 7th Annual Chevrolet Feather Awards.
The more things change, the more they stay the same, and as the Chevrolet Feather Awards, we are here to celebrate, laugh at and note the changes that didn’t change or the changes that stood out, as we usually do. Reaching out to the mother land, this year’s awards are themed ‘Rainbow Africa’ and will see the inaugural African Feather of the Year Award being presented to an African LGBTI activist.
Our faves may not have changed much, but the Feathers are changing and we are growing. This year we will introduce The African Feather Of The Year Award, an award sponsored by partners The Other Foundation, to be awarded to Africans who continue to inspire and uplift the LGBTI community. Another notable change is the direction of the Role Model of the Year Award. That award will now go to an LGBTI person or organisation whose work empowers and uplifts the LGBTI community.
Firm favourites such as the Hunk of the Year and Drama Queen of the Year still don’t disappoint, capturing the men who leave both men and women drooling and for the latter category, those personalities whose antics leave the public lifting jaws on the floor in amazement. The Couple of the Year category features athlete Caster Semenya and her partner and Toya Delazy and Allison. This year’s event will leave a different flavour in the mouths of the public and the nominees … but that should not surprise anyone.
Once again we wish to thank long time partners Chevrolet and the Films and Publications Board and new partner The Other Foundation. In celebration of our 7TH anniversary, The Chevrolet Feather Awards together with The Other Foundation will host 7 LGBTI activists from different parts of the continent, one of whom will be the recipient of the inaugural African Feather of the Year Award.
The ceremony will be nothing like the usual, this year’s awards ceremony will be hosted in the heart of the Joburg CBD, a change the organizers are excited about. Hosting the Chevrolet Feather Awards this year will be previous winner and funny man Tall A$$ Mo and everyone’s favorite tall girl and 2015 nominee Luthando ‘LootLove’ Shosha and actor and presenter Lumko Johnson will run the pink carpet.
“Celebrating our success is always a nice thing but the work that goes into LGBTI programs is far from over. In years to come we will realize the dream of living in a rainbow Africa, free from the killings, the rapes and we will be free to love whomever we love. Through this platform we wish to not only to celebrate our nominees and winners but to continue igniting dialogues around issues of sexuality and the LGBTI. Until then, cheers to the 201 nominees and winners.” Thami Kotlolo
The Chevrolet Feather Awards ceremony will be held in Johannesburg on November 12th, and promises to deliver all the glamour, drama, and star-power that it’s become so well known for.
