Soweto, Johannesburg – Event organisers are proud to announce the introduction of Soweto Day to be hosted on 01 November 2015 in the heart of Soweto across two venues: Walter Sisulu Square and the Soweto Theatre. The event, an initiative of the Gauteng Provincial Government through the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR), will be a lifestyle platform created to not only celebrate Soweto and its people, but to empower business in and around township by giving them a chance to showcase their talents and goods to the public. The festival will include entertaining activities such as HomeGrown food, fashion, arts and live music provided by local entrepreneurs, artists, jewellers, fashion designers.
Leveraging of the Old Mutual Soweto Marathon, which takes place on the same date, Soweto Day aims to spotlight key entertainment and cultural nodes within Soweto. The Old Mutual Soweto Marathon enjoys a strong pull of over 20,000 local and international participants as well as spectators from throughout the country.
‘Through the Soweto Day festival, we have an opportunity to bring Soweto alive and positively impact its economy’, says Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Ms Molebatsi Bopape. ‘Ultimately, Soweto Day is as much for the people of Soweto as for outsiders – the success of this platform is dependent on the support of not just Soweto based residents, but of the region as a whole’, she continues. South Africans need to actively participate in boosting their own economy – and this is just the first of many HomeGrown platforms that will see us achieve this goal’, she concludes.
Soweto Day is geared for the whole family to enjoy and will feature eclectic and super talented Nomi SuperStar alongside a list of locally based talent including GuruLogic, Urban Village, DJ Schotz, and Native 2120 to name a few.
The Soweto Day festival will be hosted in partnership with Soweto-based event organisers Locrate Market and 7 Colours Sunday and will be powered by media partners Soweto TV and Sowetan and Sunday World.
Limited tickets to each venue are available at no cost, however these will need to be pre-booked via sms. Reserve your exclusive ticket by smsing Soweto and your Name, Surname, Age and City to 48440. SMS is charged at R2.00
