Artist Koyo Bala (37) has lost his battle with cancer. The bubbly and ever-so talkative star passed away at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town on Monday morning.

Bala’s long-time friend, designer Ephraim Molingoana, told the Sowetan newspaper: “We are devastated and in a state of disbelief.”

In a 2011 interview with DRUM magazine, Bala spoke openly about living with HIV. He said he had received the diagnosis in 2010 and had made a commitment to help others in the same situation.

“I am HIV-positive, and as a celebrity and someone who is openly gay, it is important to come out. I want to use my bubbly personality to help those struggling to come to terms with their status and instil a sense of hope.”

He also revealed to the magazine how he had learnt that he was HIV-positive.

“It was just a normal day, but I felt that I owed it to myself to go find out about my status.” After all, he had worked as an HIV/Aids volunteer and part of his responsibility was being tested on an annual basis.

“I went to the clinic in Yeoville, went through counselling and had a blood test done. I was confident my results would come back negative.”

The results were positive, but Bala vowed to live his life to the fullest. The 3sum group member was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and fought a brave battle against the disease.
