DETROIT INVASION INVADES JOBURG WITH MA DUKES, RJ FROM SLUM VILLAGE, GUILTY SIMPSON, PHAT KAT & DEAD PREZ
If you’ve been going through your music collection and reminiscing about the good ol’ days, you might want to clear your Saturday May 27 to check out the Back 2 The Old Skool International Music Festival, set to be held at the Wanderers Rugby Fields in Johannesburg.
The hip-hop stage will feature an official tribute to American producer J Dilla, who died of a blood disease 11 years ago. J Dilla, also known as Jay Dee, influenced and worked with many an artist including Young RJ of Slum Village – the latter will hit the stage as part of a huge Detroit invasion, which includes Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, and Ma Dukes The “Godfather of SA House” .DJ Christos returns for a second consecutive year. Last year, Christos and co. played to over 12,000 fans at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown.
Now in its second year, the festival is a chance to pay homage to the pioneers of hip-hop, kwaito and house music. And to prove how serious Global Event Entertainment are about taking over, they have brought the rap duo Dead Prez .
He will be joined by other returnees including former Kaya FM icon, Bob Mabena, DJ Ganyani, Mbuso and Fistaz.
The Kwaito stage will feature threatens to steal the day with icons including DJ Cleo, Pitch Black Afro, Mapaputsi, Mshoza, Spykos, Msawawa, Mzambiya, Zola, Brickz, Thebe, and Tokollo of TKZee fame all set to perform.
The Afro Soul stage will see crooners Vusi Nova, Nathi, Malik, Sliq Angel, Ntando, and Mxo charm the female audience with their warm vocals.
It’s your once-off chance to witness over 60 of the real OGs in action on four different stages without the skips of an old CD.
For the first time ever, the festival will also feature the Lifestyle Lounge, proudly presented by MT Lounge chesa nyama. The exclusive access, covered and furnished zone will feature bars and food service.
On site you will can treat yourself to food from the trucks that will be serving gourmet food as well numerous restaurants on site – Artisan (Greenside), Republic of 94 (Braamfontein), Immigrant (Braamfontein), Kota Kings (Braamfontein) and many more.

The day-night festival is brought to Mzansi by Global Event Entertainment in association with Mzansi Magic Music, Sowetan, Sunday World and Hype Energy Drink.
