ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE NFL SUPERBOWL 2024

 It’s almost here. The 58th annual showdown between the top American Football teams, the 2024 American National Football League’s Super Bowl takes place this month and will broadcast live, exclusively across Africa on ESPN (Dstv 218, Starsat 248) and on ESPN2 (DStv 249) from 1:30 AM (CAT) on Monday 12 February 2024.

One of the most celebrated events on the U.S. sporting calendar, the annual championship game that will see the league’s top franchises competing to hold the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy, will be repeated later in the day. On ESPN2, there will be rull repeats at 08:00 and 20:00, with a 14:00 slot scheduled for ESPN. A highlights package will air later in the week with broadcast slots to be confirmed. Extending beyond sport, the Super Bowl is a truly global cultural event, with high-entertainment value accompanying a nail-biting game. 

Whether this will be your first time watching the Super Bowl or  58th time, here are a few things you need to know:

Who is playing?

The reigning champions, Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will once again compete in the NFL’s championship match as the two football teams each won their respective conference title games this past weekend. These two titan franchises last competed against each other four years ago, with the Chiefs claiming victory.

Where is the 2024 Superbowl LVIII being played?

This will be the first time the Super Bowl will be played in Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, which opened in 2020. It is also the first time the big game will be played in the state of Nevada at all, in the city synonymous with the world’s biggest casinos, world-leading entertainment, neon signs and Elvis Presley fandom.

Who will be performing? 

The Superbowl will continue its legacy of hosting unrivalled musical performances. Reba McEntire will perform the national anthem, and Andra Day will perform her “Lift Every Voice and Sing” ahead of the game. Post Malone will perform “America the Beautiful,” and Usher will perform the celebrated halftime show.

According to ESPN Africa, tickets for the event in Las Vegas currently start at $6,646 each (approx. R 125 000). The top tier tickets $60,613 (approx. R 1,1 million) each, for front-row seats.

Which Quarterbacks lead the competing teams?

The Chiefs are led by star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, who has been celebrated widely in the media this year following his emphatic on-field performances as well as his relationship with singer Taylor Swift.

The 49ers are led by quarterback Brock Purdy, who has delivered consistently impressive stats and clutch comebacks this season, as well as running back Christian McCaffrey, whose stellar season so far has broken franchise and NFL records.
