Disney Africa’s first long-form series production in South Africa

Disney Cookabout is a brand new weekly comedic adventure game-show that uses food preparation, cooking and outdoor exploration to showcase local ingredients and a fun-filled approach to healthy eating.

This is the first collaboration between The Walt Disney Company Africa and SABC of a long-form series in South Africa. The show premieres on SABC2, Friday 05 August 2016 at 15:30.

Produced by Penguin Films, Disney Cookabout’s 26 episodes feature some of the best of South Africa’s locally-farmed, wholesome produce, giving a fascinating insight into the food children are used to seeing only in supermarkets and on their dinner plates. The show is fronted by home-grown talent including hosts Kirsten Mohamed (‘Chef Kirsten’) and her side-kick ‘Sous Chef’ Mthunzi Ntoyi who travel across the Western Cape with a dynamic group of young ‘cooktestants’, all in search of the freshest ingredients.

Each week, the cooktestants will battle it out to take home the Silver Spoon, and eventually the Golden Trophy, as they carry out challenges at various locations. With supplies in hand, they will attempt to create the tastiest dish in the magical Cookabout Kitchen where anything can happen, from doors and drawers sliding open and appliances responding to secret voice commands. The hilarious Mickey Mouse animated shorts will also be added into the mix, creating an entertaining comedic interlude for viewers whilst the cooktestants’ creations are cooking.

Christine Service, Senior Vice President and Country Manager of The Walt Disney Company Africa comments: “Disney Cookabout is inspired by The Walt Disney Company’s long-standing global commitment to inspire healthy living through imaginative and entertaining family content. We hope that viewers will not only enjoy the show but also be encouraged to acquire new skills to create their own nutritious, fresh meals from the abundance of wonderful ingredients South Africa has to offer.”

Since 2006, Disney has been committed to helping families make healthier choices, using its stories and characters to make healthy living simple and fun. Since then, Disney has been looking at the different ways it can support families to live more healthily. This includes introducing robust nutritional guidelines for food and drinks as well as their advertising and offering content that positively focuses on healthier lifestyles such as the Disney Healthy Living Website (www.disneyhealthyliving.co.za), Aim High on Disney XD (2011 – 2014) and Disney Cookabout.

Jacqui Hlongwane, Programme Manager for SABC 2 comments: “We are thrilled to be bringing Disney Cookabout, Disney’s first long-form series local production to our screens this August, taking South African children on a fascinating and entertaining adventure across our beautiful country. SABC2’s new channel pillars include Health and Education.

Disney Cookabout directly speaks to our content strategy and we hope that this show will encourage young people to adopt a healthy life style from an early age. SABC2 is excited about its collaboration with Disney and is happy to be able to bring such an exciting, high-end, quality programme to one of the most important but sometimes overlooked audiences, our children.

A dash of exploration added to a large cup of humour, sprinkled with brain-tingling facts and stirred with tasty recipes, Disney Cookabout is served every Friday at 15:30 on SABC 2 from August 5th. Fans can visit www.disneycookabout.co.za from August 1st and share in the excitement on www.facebook.com/DisneyinAfrica and #DisneyCookabout.
