by

The world renowned beach obstacle course race Red Bull Quicksand is heading to Durban this year, and entries are now open for all runners and fitness enthusiasts that want to test their fitness level in the innovative and gruelling seaside race.

The run that is now considered one of the most revered and exciting events on the global racing calendar started back in 2018 in Margate on the southeast coast of England. This year Red Bull Quicksand kicks off for the first time in South Africa on the North Beach of Durban.

Taking place on 16 July 2022, Red Bull Quicksand could be the most challenging mile the athletes ever run, as runners expend 1.6 times more energy on sand than running on a road surface. The demanding 1 mile course includes a number of sandy climbs, giving competitors a full fitness examination, the inaugural local event will see participants push through the sand on the one-mile long course under the scorching Durban sun.

The man-made ‘sandcastle’ obstacles will tower over the competitors, forcing them to climb vertically over the loose terrain, creating a challenge to even the most hardened athletes – The ‘sandcastle’ course comprises of multiple sections created to test endurance, agility and speed.

With starving lungs and burning calves, advancing competitors will face the course all over again. The event follows a knockout format with runners progressing through heats and semifinals to reach the grand final, in what is set to be an energy-sapping day.
